Comedian Shyam Rangeela To Contest Against Modi In Varanasi

GUWAHATI: Shyam Rangeela, a popular comedian renowned for his mimicry of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has announced his candidacy to contest against the prime minister in the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections 2024 from Varanasi. The news has drawn significant attention as Varanasi is a crucial constituency in Uttar Pradesh, where Modi secured victories in 2014 and 2019. The election in Varanasi will be held on June 1, with results expected on June 4.

Rangeela announced his decision on social media on Wednesday, May 1. Known for his satirical videos where he imitates the prime minister's speeches and mannerisms, Rangeela explained his reason for running against Modi. He cited instances where BJP candidates had won unopposed, such as in Surat, and highlighted the importance of providing voters with an alternative choice.

“I feel like it shouldn’t be that there is no other candidate to vote for. Even if one person wants to vote against a candidate, he or she has that right. Someone’s name should be on the EVM," Rangeela said in his video.

Rangeela gained national attention for his comedic acts in 'The Great Indian Laughter Challenge'. He made headlines in 2017 when his viral mimicry act of Modi spread widely on social media platforms. Despite his initial admiration for the prime minister, Rangeela's content has since become critical of Modi's policies.

Rangeela also referenced his early involvement in politics with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), a stint that led him to later declare himself as an independent voice. “I was a bhakt even till 2016-17, but then restrictions were imposed on me," he told media, explaining his shift from a supporter to a critic of Modi.

The contest for Varanasi is set to be a high-profile battle, with the Congress fielding Ajay Rai, its Uttar Pradesh unit chief, as its candidate. Rai previously finished third in both the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Transgender activist Mahamandaleshwar Hemangi Sakhi is also in the fray from the same constituency.

Modi is expected to file his nomination on May 13.
