This was announced by President Droupadi Murmu on Friday, January 31, while addressing both Houses of the Parliament on the first day of the Budget session.

To facilitate the same, the government has allocated ₹5,36,000 crore to make affordable housing accessible to eligible families.

PMAY, launched in 2015, focuses on ensuring housing for all. In the Union Budget 2024-25, ₹54,500 crore was allocated for Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) [PMAY-U], accounting for 36.5% of the total funds given to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA).

The second phase, PMAY-U 2.0, will run from 2024 to 2029. States and Union Territories can participate after signing a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with MoHUA. The scheme particularly targets Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), Lower Income Groups (LIG), and Middle Income Groups (MIG-I).

The eligibility criteria to meet the scheme’s requirements are as follows:

- EWS households: Annual income up to ₹3,00,000.
- LIG households: Annual income between ₹3,00,000 to ₹6,00,000.
- MIG households: Annual income between ₹6,00,000 to ₹9,00,000.

Additionally, applicants must not own a pucca house and should not have benefited from any government housing scheme in the last 20 years.
