GUWAHATI: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is set to submit a fresh progress report on Monday, February 24, before a special court in Kolkata regarding its ongoing probe into the R.G. Kar rape and murder case. The report comes following a directive from the court after the victim’s parents accused the agency of failing to provide periodic updates on the investigation.

The special court had recently sentenced civic volunteer Sanjay Roy, the prime convict in the case, to life imprisonment. With the conviction now concluded, the fresh progress report is expected to shed light on allegations of evidence tampering and alteration, a key aspect of the ongoing probe.
The CBI has already challenged the special court’s verdict in the Calcutta High Court, seeking the death penalty for Roy. The West Bengal government also moved a similar plea; however, the High Court ruled that only the CBI, as the investigating agency, has the authority to make such a request.
The case dates back to August 9 last year, when the body of a woman doctor, who was brutally raped and murdered, was found in the seminar hall of state-run R.G. Kar Medical College. The initial investigation was handled by Kolkata Police but was later transferred to the CBI following a Calcutta High Court order due to allegations of severe evidence tampering during the early stages of the probe.
As part of the investigation, the CBI arrested Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of R.G. Kar, and Abhijit Mondal, former SHO of Tala Police Station, on charges of tampering with and altering evidence.
However, both secured default bail after the CBI failed to file a supplementary charge sheet within 90 days of their arrests. Mondal is currently out on bail, while Ghosh remains in judicial custody due to a separate probe into financial irregularities at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital.
