Local residents witnessed the car plunging into the canal and promptly alerted the police. Officers from Izzat Nagar Police Station rushed to the scene and successfully rescued all three passengers.
According to one of the passengers, the driver was relying on the Google Maps app for navigation when the mishap occurred.
Even though there were no casualties, the incident has raised renewed concerns about the reliability of navigation apps in rural and underdeveloped areas, as a similar incident occurred last month in Uttar Pradesh. Three people lost their lives when their car drove off an under-construction bridge into the Ramganga river after it was misled by GPS directions.
Following the incident, the police had filed an FIR against four Public Works Department engineers and unnamed individuals, including a regional officer of Google Maps, for negligence.
