GUWAHATI: The Central government is set to launch a scheme designed to assist deserving sections currently residing in rented houses, slums, chawls, or unauthorised colonies to purchase or build their own homes. This was announced by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on February 1.
The upcoming housing scheme aims to address the housing needs of the middle class, particularly those living in challenging conditions such as rented houses, slums, chawls, or unauthorised colonies.
By facilitating the transition from these living situations to homeownership, a significant segment of the middle-class population is to be empowered with better housing and living conditions.
Sitharaman further said that the government will give 2 crore more houses under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna - Gramin. "We are close to achieving the target of 3 crore under the rural housing scheme. Two crore more would be constructed in the next five years," said Sitharaman.
The scheme is expected to provide financial assistance and incentives to eligible individuals or families, enabling them to either buy existing housing units or build new homes.
