The incident that led to the case involved a video posted by Surya on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, where he is alleged to have appealed to voters by invoking religious sentiments. This act, according to the complaint, violates election norms that prohibit seeking votes on the basis of religion, caste, community, or language.
Surya, a prominent BJP leader and national president of its youth wing, the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, is contesting against Congress candidate Sowmya Reddy, who narrowly lost the 2023 Jayanagar Assembly election by just 16 votes.
