Bill Against Magical Healing Tabled At Assam Assembly

GUWAHATI: The Assam Government tabled the ‘Assam Healing (Prevention of Evil) Practices Bill 2024’ in the Assam Legislative Assembly today on February 21.

The Bill was introduced by the State Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pijush Hazarika, and it seeks to abolish non-scientific or ‘magical’ healing practices which exploit and threaten the health of innocent people.

The Bill, which was approved by the Assam State Cabinet on February 10, enables the State Government to initiate legal action and penalize any act or promotion of such practices with punishments including imprisonment up to three years, a fine of ₹50,000, or both, while repeat offenders would be facing up to five years in jail or a fine of ₹1 lakh, or both. 

Earlier, the Bill was criticized by Christian groups in Assam who claimed that the Bill violates the constitutional rights of the Christians.
