GUWAHATI: India’s highest civilian honour, Bharat Ratna, was awarded to former Prime Ministers of India Chaudhary Charan Singh and P.V. Narasimha Rao today by the President of India, Droupadi Murmu.

The Bharat Ratna recipients this year also included eminent agricultural scientist M.S. Swaminathan, and former Bihar Chief Minister Karpoori Thakur, who were conferred with the award posthumously, in a ceremony held today at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.

The awards were received by the family members of the recipients including P. V Narasimha Rao’s son, P.V. Prabhakar Rao, Chaudhary Charan Singh’s grandson Jayant Chaudhary, Dr. M.S. Swaminathan’s daughter Dr. Nitya Rao, and Karpoori Thakur’s son Ramnath Thakur.
The Centre had earlier announced five Bharat Ratna recipients this year, including one to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) stalwart and former deputy prime minister L K Advani.
