GUWAHATI: AAP leader and former Delhi minister Atishi on Sunday, February 23, was appointed as the Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, marking the first time a woman has held the position. The upcoming session will also make history as the first to witness a woman Leader of Opposition taking on a woman Chief Minister.

Atishi was selected for the role during AAP’s legislative meeting, where MLA Sanjeev Jha proposed her name. Expressing gratitude, she reportedly said, “Thanks to AAP’s national convenor Arvind Kejriwal and the Legislative Party for trusting me. A strong Opposition raises the voice of the people. The Aam Aadmi Party will fulfil all the promises made by BJP.”
The first session of the newly elected Delhi Assembly will begin on Monday. The BJP-led government has announced that pending Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) reports evaluating the performance of the previous AAP government will be tabled.
In the February 5 elections, the BJP reclaimed Delhi’s hotseat, securing 48 out of 70 seats, while AAP won 22. The Congress failed to win any seats. Despite AAP’s setback, Atishi retained her Kalkaji constituency seat against BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri. However, several key AAP leaders, including former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and ex-Deputy CM Manish Sisodia, lost their seats.
