GUWAHATI: On January 1, the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) was launched in Guwahati.
Developed in collaboration with Chalo, a prominent transport technology company, and RuPay, the NCMC is the flagship product of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).
This tap-to-pay prepaid card promises seamless transactions not only on Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) buses but also across various platforms, including metro rail, shops, restaurants, and online services.
The NCMC, introduced by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India, is poised to revolutionise travel and financial transactions by providing a unified solution for various payment needs.
On the same day, Assam Transport Minister, Parimal Suklabaidya, expressed his enthusiasm for this transformative initiative through a post on social media.
Suklabaidya stated, "HCM dangoriya also launched the National Common Mobility Card, an initiative by ASTC in line with GoI's vision of 'One Nation, One Card,' to simplify payments in transport, shopping, etc.”
But the question remains: Can you apply this card online? Will this card benefit you?
While the card brings numerous benefits, its full-fledged implementation is currently pending, with availability limited to only specific areas.
Speaking to GPlus, a senior official from ASTC said, "As of now, it will be available in few areas. Further discussions are yet to be taken."
This reveals that the card's rollout faces challenges that need resolution before it can be widely accessible.
The NCMC, operating through the RuPay card system, serves as a versatile transport card that goes beyond facilitating travel payments. The National Common Mobility Card is not just stated to be a travel card; it's a comprehensive solution for the modern commuter.
It is designed to seamlessly integrate payments for travel fares, toll taxes, and retail purchases, and even allow for cash withdrawals. However, despite these promises, its full-fledged execution remains pending.
The NCMC offers a range of features, allowing users to make instant contactless payments in ASTC buses and other transport modes throughout India.
Beyond transportation, it facilitates payments at over 20 lakh RuPay terminals nationwide, covering shopping, dining, travel expenses, utility bills, and online transactions.
Recharge convenience is a highlight, with the ability to recharge the card instantly in ASTC buses by conductors, ensuring a hassle-free experience for commuters.
Initially accessible at key points like the Airport ASTC Kiosk, Paltan Bazar ASTC counter, ISBT ASTC counter, and Rupnagar ASTC Yard, the card issuance requires essential documents such as Aadhaar Card, Aadhaar-linked phone number, and OTP verification.
Furthermore, the online recharge option is set to enhance user convenience, allowing cardholders to recharge via the Chalo application using UPI, debit/credit cards, or Internet banking.
Offline recharge services will be available in ASTC buses through conductors and at designated issuance points.
Despite these advancements, discussions on expanding the card's availability are ongoing, emphasizing the need for further deliberations before achieving widespread implementation.
As commuters eagerly await the card's comprehensive integration, the NCMC remains poised to redefine digital transactions and enhance the overall travel experience in Guwahati.
The challenges in execution highlight the complexities involved, and resolving them will be pivotal for the card to realize its full potential.
