Assam's Semiconductor Unit To Produce 48 Million Chips Daily, Create 27,000 Jobs

GUWAHATI: Assam’s semiconductor facility in Jagiroad, expected to begin production in 2025, will have a daily output of over 48 million chips, generating 27,000 direct and indirect jobs in the region.

This was announced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma while addressing attendees at the ongoing Advantage Assam 2.0 Summit on Tuesday, February 25.

Sarma highlighted the state's commitment to producing cutting-edge technology, stating that the semiconductor industry would reshape industries, create employment, and position Assam on the global technology map. He also invited global investors to explore the vast opportunities in the state.

The summit was also attended by Union Minister for Electronics & IT and Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw, who announced key initiatives for the state, including:

- A second semiconductor plant to strengthen Assam’s role in India’s chip-making sector.
- A NEILIT University campus at Jagiroad to boost tech education.
- An electronics manufacturing cluster in Kamrup to support infrastructure development.

In addition to semiconductor advancements, Vaishnaw unveiled several railway projects to enhance Assam’s connectivity and logistics, including:

- Two new Amrit Bharat trains and six Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals.
- Upgradation of 60+ railway stations to Amrit Stations.
- A railway coach and repair hub in Bodoland and a locomotive factory at Lumding.
- A Kokrajhar-Gelephu railway line to improve cross-border connectivity with Bhutan.
