According to forest officials, this surge in arrival of birds began in late October and is expected to peak in December. “Most of the birds come from European countries and the Tibetan region. We have taken all necessary precautions to ensure their protection,” said Pranjal Baruah, Forest Ranger at Pobitora.

To protect the birds and wildlife, the sanctuary has taken to ramp up its monitoring efforts, setting up 25 anti-poaching camps and conducting regular patrols around the region.

Incidentally, the seasonal migration has also boosted tourism. Between October 14 and November 15, around 4,000 domestic and international visitors explored the sanctuary, generating ₹5 lakh in revenue. With elephant and jeep safaris available, officials only expect visitors to surge further in numbers during the peak migration period.

The sanctuary recorded 69 species of migratory birds last year, and officials are anticipating even higher numbers this season.
