Assam’s Margherita Sees Mass Exodus Of Coal Miners; Exposes Illegal Mining Activities

On Monday, many workers were seen departing for their hometowns, mainly via rail transport such as intercity express trains

GUWAHATI: Over 5,000 migrant coal miners have left illegal mining sites in Assam’s Margherita, following a directive by Assam Director General of Police (DGP) Gyanendra Pratap Singh on Sunday, January 19, to seal all rat-hole mines within seven days.

The miners working in the region were primarily from districts like Barpeta, Goalpara, Dhubri, Morigaon, Nagaon, and Meghalaya. They were employed at several illegal mines in areas such as Margherita, Lekhapani, Bargolai, Ledo, and Tipong.

On Monday, many workers were seen departing for their hometowns, mainly via rail transport such as intercity express trains.

The crackdown in shutting down all illegal mines comes in the wake of a fatal incident in Umrangso, where a group of coal miners died in an accident at an illegal mine.

This incident prompted the Assam government and the police to intensify efforts against illegal coal mining statewide.
