Released on July 19, the Assamese film ‘Bidurbhai’ earned ₹33 lakh on its opening day. Its collections rose steadily: ₹37 lakh on Saturday, ₹53 lakh on Sunday, ₹43 lakh on Monday, ₹46 lakh on Tuesday, and ₹47 lakh on Wednesday, bringing the six-day total to ₹2.59 crore. With an expected ₹50 lakh on Thursday, the first week’s total is projected to reach ₹3.09 crore. Given that Assam represents about 1% of a major circuit, if the film had released in Hindi and performed well, its first-week earnings nation-wide could have been around  ₹309 crore.

Director Subrata Kakoty’s debut directorial venture, Sri Raghupati (2023) turned out to be the biggest blockbuster of Assamese cinema. Even Bidurbhai is on its way to becoming one of the biggest Assamese hits, if not the biggest!

The story revolves around four friends from impoverished backgrounds scheme risky plan for quick money, initially enjoy lavish lifestyle but face moral dilemmas and harsh repercussions as consequences of their actions unfold.

Bidurbhai has released outside Assam — in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Madras, Bombay, Pune, New Delhi and Goa this Friday, 26 July.
