GUWAHATI: Assam Police swept to action and arrested Bir Lachit Sena leader Shrinkhal Chaliha after he was accused of extorting money from a local businessman in Sivasagar in the name of holding a Bihu programme.
In a recent viral CCTV camera footage dated April 28, Shrinkal Chaliha was seen misbehaving with a businessman somewhere in Sivasagar. In the video, he was allegedly asking money from the business for holding a Bihu programme.
Upon not receiving the demanded amount, Chaliha allegedly spits on the businessman’s face before exiting the scene.
Assam DGP, GP Singh today posted on Twitter informing that Shrinkhal Chaliha has been arrested for extortion demand in the name of donation for the socio-cultural event and the action is being taken per law.
“Reference extortion demand at Sivasagar in the name of donation for socio-cultural event - named accused person, one Shrinkhal Chaliha has been arrested and action is being taken per law. @mygovassam directions regarding Forceful collection for socio-cultural events would be strictly implemented by @assampolice,” read his tweet.
Bir Lachit Sena leader Shrinkhal Chaliha has been alleged to be engaging in hooliganism and threatening, and abusing the business community if they don’t pay ‘Chanda’.
Only two days ago, the Bir Lachit Sena leader Shrinkhal Chaliha was reportedly put under house arrest by the police along with paramilitary force, after another video of him surfaced where he was allegedly abusing and spitting on the face of one businessman in Sivasagar, Assam.
