GUWAHATI: Assam Police on Sunday, March 6, apprehended an alleged member of the Central Committee cum ideologue and strategist of CPI-Maoist.
The arrested Maoist has been identified as Arun Kumar Bhattacharjee alias Jyotish, alias Kabir, alias Kanak alias Kanchan Da. In CPI Maoist circles, he is known as Kanchan Da.
72-year-old Kanchan Da hails from Howrah, West Bengal, and has been attached to the Maoist movement, Guwahati Commissioner of Police Harmeet Singh said at a press conference in Guwahati on Monday, March 7.
“We received information from Central Agencies in December about such a person moving around in bordering areas. We have been working since then and bordering areas are numerous in Assam including many regions. On 6 March, at about 5 PM in Khaligram Area, under Odarbondh PS of Cachar District, we were able to nab and arrest Kanchan Da who is a Central Committee member, cum ideologue, and strategist of CPI-Maoist,” the Commissioner of Police added.
The CPI-Maoist has been making attempts to spread the root of their organisation in Assam in general and the North-East in particular.
Kanchan Da was allegedly tasked to set up a completely new system of Maoism in Assam by setting up a state-level team of the CPI-Maoist.
Moreover, they were planning to set up a Red-Corridor from the neighbouring country to Maoist areas in Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, parts of Odisha where there is an existing insurgency.
Additionally, a cash amount of Rs 3, 60,000 along with other incriminating articles was recovered from his possession, Commissioner of Police Harmeet Singh said.
