“We plan to release the voter list for the elections on or before December 30, 2024,” Sarma told the media. “If everything goes according to plan, we aim to complete the panchayat elections by February 10, 2025.”

He added that the election schedule would be announced in early January 2025, with polling held in two phases.

The elections have been overdue since the end of the previous panchayat term. Sarma, however, emphasised that the delay allowed for an extensive delimitation process at the block level, ensuring fair representation without reducing the overall number of panchayats.

In an earlier meeting with district commissioners in July, the chief minister had highlighted the need for careful reorganisation to prevent infrastructure disruption at the panchayat level. The delimitation drive, he stressed, should ensure equitable representation without compromising existing development.

Other decisions taken in the cabinet meeting involved the announcement of the Investment And Infrastructure Summit For February 2025, and the renaming of Karimganj district as ‘Sribhumi.’
