GUWAHATI: A man was apprehended on Wednesday afternoon from the Tezpur University campus after he was found accused of blackmailing a female student from the university.
The accused has been identified as Nazrul Islam, a labourer working inside the campus and a resident of the Borghat area of Sonitpur district in Assam.
Students from the university while speaking to G Plus alleged that the labourer discreetly took a video of a female student residing in one of the hostels of the university and blackmailed her with the intention to extort money from the student.
While speaking to G Plus, a Tezpur University student seeking anonymity stated, "Upon approaching the university authorities about the blackmailing issue, they dismissed it, claiming it was just a video and would be handled accordingly by them."
However, on Wednesday afternoon, Islam was arrested by the Borghat Police Officials after a complaint was filed at the police station regarding the incident.
A senior official from the Borghat Police Station informed G Plus, "The accused has been identified as a labourer employed within the university premises. It has been confirmed that the accused had demanded a sum of money from the victim.”
The police official further informed G Plus that an inquiry is underway into the matter and further details will be revealed once available.
