Assam Lagging Behind National Gross Enrolment Ratio

GUWAHATI: Assam's Education Minister, Ranoj Pegu, has highlighted the importance of enhancing the Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in higher education, citing the state's current GER of 16.9% as below the national average of 28.4%. Pegu attributes this disparity primarily to incomplete data submission to the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE).

In an effort to address this issue, the Higher Education Department of Assam organized a three-day workshop at B Borooah College, involving over 800 Government and Private Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). The workshop aimed to ensure accurate and timely data submission to AISHE, thereby providing the government with a comprehensive understanding of the Higher Education sector.

Pegu emphasised that while Assam's enrolment rates are satisfactory, the incomplete data submission hampers the calculation of GER and other vital metrics. He reiterated the importance of aligning Assam's educational goals with the objectives outlined in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which aims for a 50% GER by 2030.
