Assam government directs schools to reduce students' bag weight by May 30

GUWAHATI: All education institutions in the state have been instructed by Assam Education minister, Siddhartha Bhattacharya, to follow the new directives issued by the HRD ministry over weight limitations of school bags. 

The education department has set a deadline of May 30 for schools to reduce the weight of school bags.

The new directive mentions that students should not be asked to bring additional books, extra materials etc. that exceeds the prescribed limit. 

The weight of school bags for students of each class should not weigh more than the listed numbers below -

Class I and II: 1.5 kgs.

Class III to V: 2- 3 kgs.

Class VI and VII:  4 kgs.

Class VIII and IX: 4.5 kgs. 

Class X student: 5 kgs.
