Assam Floods: Over 6 Lakh People Affected, Death Toll Rises To 18

 

GUWAHATI: As of Monday, June 3, Assam is grappling with severe flooding, impacting ten districts and disrupting the lives of over 6 lakh people. The Disaster Reporting and Information Management System (DRIMS) has issued a detailed report highlighting the extent of the crisis, with the overall death toll rising to 18.

The flood has wreaked havoc across ten districts: Hojai, Karimganj, Morigaon, Nagaon, Dima-Hasao, Cachar, Dibrugarh, Hailakandi, Golaghat, and Karbi Anglong West. According to the Central Water Commission (CWC) bulletin released at 8 AM, the rivers Kopili, Dharamtul, and Kushiyara are flowing above danger levels.

In total, 23 revenue circles have been affected. Cachar and Karimganj are the worst hit, with five revenue circles affected.

A staggering 577 villages are submerged. Nagaon is the most affected with 174 villages inundated. 

The overall population affected stands at 6,25,318, with Nagaon alone accounting for 3,63,778 people. The flood has also damaged 6,023.18 hectares of crop area.

124 relief camps and 103 relief distribution centres have been opened, with Cachar hosting the highest number of relief camps at 67. A total of 36,741 people are currently residing in relief camps, with significant numbers reported in Cachar and Hojai.

In addition to camp relief, 1,76,643 people are receiving aid through distribution centres. Hojai and Nagaon districts have the highest numbers of non-camp inmates, with 52,468 and 97,758 people respectively.

Tragically, four lives have been confirmed lost due to the floods in the last 24 hours, all in Cachar district. Another four individuals are reported missing, also from Cachar.

Rescue operations are underway, involving agencies such as the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Fire & Emergency Services, and local administrations. In total, 74 boats have been deployed, evacuating numerous individuals and animals from the flood-affected regions.
