Assam Floods: Over 5 Lakh Affected, Death Toll Rises To 14

GUWAHATI: In the wake of escalating floodwaters, Assam finds itself grappling with a state of emergency as 13 districts reel under the deluge. The Disaster Reporting and Information Management System (DRIMS) reported the latest situation as of Sunday, June 2.

Rivers, including Kopili, Barak, and Kushiyara, have surged beyond the danger level, posing a significant threat to communities along their banks. Thirteen districts bear the brunt of this natural calamity, namely Hailakandi, Karimganj, Hojai, Dhemaji, Kamrup, Dibrugarh, Nagaon, Morigaon, Cachar, South Salmara, Karbi Anglong West, Golaghat, and Dima-Hasao.

With 26 revenue circles and 564 villages affected, the floodwaters have displaced a significant population, disrupting lives and livelihoods. The total population affected stands at 535,246, with over 212,824 males, 177,302 females, and 145,120 children bearing the brunt of the disaster.

Authorities have set up 275 relief camps and distribution centres across the affected districts. These facilities aim to provide shelter, food, and medical assistance to the displaced population. However, the challenge persists as over 39,269 individuals remain in need of urgent relief support.

The exact toll of human casualties is 14 as three lives were lost in the last 24 hours, with two individuals reported missing. Additionally, thousands of animals have been affected, exacerbating the crisis further.

Rescue operations, spearheaded by various agencies including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local authorities, are underway. Medical teams have been deployed, and boats are being utilised to evacuate stranded individuals.
