GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister (CM) Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday, September 9, said that the construction of the bridge connecting Jorhat to Majuli will begin from November this year.

Speaking to mediapersons in Jorhat, Sarma said that work on the proposed bridge is ongoing. "We have allowed an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract, and the contractors have already submitted the design of the bridge to the Government of India. I have spoken to the concerned authorities and once the design is approved by the Government, construction work will start from November 2021," the CM said.

He also added that it would take at least 4 years to complete the construction of the bridge. The Government will form a Cabinet Committee to regularly supervise the construction work of the bridge during this period.

Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of the bridge between Nimatighat (Jorhat) to Kamlabarighat (Majuli) in February 2021. The estimated cost of the bridge is Rs 925.47 crores and the work has been awarded to the Uttar Pradesh State Bridge Corporation.

The total length of the two-lane bridge will be 6.8 km. As per the requirement of the Inland Waterways Authority of India, 40 spans 125 meters long (five km) road with a 10-meter vertical clearance over high flood level will be provided to facilitate water transport.
