Assam CM: Fresh Tender For Jorhat-Majuli Bridge, Nitin Gadkari To Oversee Project

GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the Jorhat-Majuli Bridge construction project is set to resume operations. This statement was made by the chief minister on Thursday, October 3.

Taking to Facebook, Sarma referred to ongoing talks between the State government and Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, with the latter choosing to personally monitor the situation in a bid to expedite the project. “With the previous contractor unwilling to continue, a fresh tender might be issued, and a decision on this will be taken soon,” the chief minister said.

This update arrived after Sarma wrote to Gadkari on September 27, urging his intervention. The chief minister’s letter noted that construction had been at a standstill since September 5, and he emphasised the need to take advantage of the dry season to make progress. Any further delays, he warned, could lead to significant time and cost overruns.

The project had hit a roadblock after the previous contractor, UP State Bridge Corporation Limited, abandoned the site. Despite the delay, the bridge has been touted to prove a key infrastructure project for the region. Estimated to cost ₹650 crore, the two-lane infrastructure is expected to be completed by December 2025.

Recently, the Opposition has been vocal about the delays. On September 26, Congress leader and Jorhat MP Gaurav Gogoi wrote to Sarma, seeking clarification on the reasons for the halt.
