Assam CM Calls For Upgrading Standard Of Assamese Cinema

GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the "Aideo' Cinema Hall at The Assam State Film (Finance & Development) Corporation [ASFFDC]. The Chief Minister also marked the occasion by releasing the National Award-winning film "Anunad-The Resonance."

Sarma emphasized the immediate need for a substantial transformation in various aspects of film production to elevate the standards of Assamese cinema. He highlighted the importance of upgrading digital systems, graphics, sound, and overall storytelling to align with the dynamic nature of the film industry.

"The time has come for a comprehensive transformation of Assamese Cinema – from our digital infrastructure to the very language and narratives of our films," Sarma said. He urged the industry to embrace modern techniques, including improved graphics, motion, and other elements, to compete effectively.

Pointing out the contrast between Assamese cinema and its counterparts in South India and Bollywood, Sarma underscored the need for Assamese films to adopt contemporary approaches. He acknowledged that traditional performance styles have limited the industry's ability to attract a broader audience.

"There is no shortage of cinema audiences, but if Assamese cinema lags behind in terms of quality, we cannot compel the audience to invest in cinema halls," Sarma asserted. He called for a competitive mindset within the Assamese film industry to ensure its relevance and appeal.

Acknowledging concerns expressed by some producers regarding the perceived lack of interest in Assamese cinema, Sarma encouraged filmmakers to embrace innovation and strive for excellence. "We must bridge the gap between regional and mainstream cinema, ensuring that Assamese films are not only culturally rich but also technically advanced," he emphasized.
