Assam Assembly To Discuss Key Bills On Final Day Of Autumn Session

GUWAHATI: The Assam Assembly is set to resume its proceedings on Friday, August 30, with a Question Hour, during which the opposition is expected to press hard against members of the ruling party.

This session marks the fifth and final day of the Autumn session. Four bills are scheduled for discussion today:

1. The Assam Right to Public Services (Amendment) Bill, 2024 is expected to be introduced by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pijush Hazarika.
2. The Assam Motor Vehicle Taxation (Amendment) Bill, 2024 is likely to be tabled by Transport Minister Keshab Mahanta.
3. The Assam Fixation of Ceiling on Land Holdings Bill, 2024, which Minister Jogen Mohan will reportedly bring up.
4. The Assam Agricultural Land (Regulation of Reclassification and Transfer for Non-Agricultural Purpose) Bill, 2024 is also to be discussed by Minister Jogen Mohan.

The Autumn session of the Assam Assembly began on August 22. The first day featured a one-hour Question Hour, followed by the presentation of Supplementary Demands for Grants for 2024–25, detailing additional budget needs. The state government had earlier notified that 13 bills were planned for introduction during this session.

So far, significant legislation passed includes the Assam Land and Revenue Regulation (Second Amendment) Bill, 2024, aimed at preserving Assam's cultural heritage, and the Assam Repealing Bill, 2024, which abolishes the 89-year-old Assam Muslim Marriages and Divorces Registration Act of 1935. This Act is replaced by the Assam Compulsory Registration of Muslim Marriages and Divorces Bill, 2024, designed to prevent child marriages and eliminate the 'Qazi' system in Muslim marriage registration.
