Assam and Bengal Ranks Top in Production of Handloom Towels, Napkins

GUWAHATI: Assam and Bengal have accounted for the highest of production of handloom towels, cloth napkins and dusters in India. 


As per the report by the 4th All India Handloom Census, products such as towel, napkin, duster, and gamcha are woven by 4.91 lakh handloom worker households, which is approximately 16.5% of such households. 


Two states completely dominate the production of towels, cloth napkins and dusters - Assam and West Bengal. Together they account for 84.4% of the production in the country.


The total number of weavers enumerated in this round are 26,73,891. 


Four states of India account for 18 lakhs of all weaver households in the country. 


These states are Assam (10.9 lakh households), West Bengal (3.4 lakhs), Manipur (2.1 lakhs), and Tamil Nadu (1.7 lakhs), as per the report.
