Asian Waterbird Census Records Increase In Bird Population At Pobitora

GUWAHATI: The Asian Waterbird Census (AWC) 2025 has recorded 10,933 waterbirds of 56 species in Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, showing a rise from 7,225 birds in 2024. The increase suggests better habitat conditions in the sanctuary’s wetlands, particularly in Tamuliduva Wetland, which recorded the highest concentration of birds.

Officials noted that 80% of the recorded birds were migratory, while 20% were resident species. Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, covering 38.85 sq km, is known for its diverse ecosystem, which supports a variety of wildlife, including birds, mammals, reptiles, and fish.

The census results were highlighted during World Wetlands Day on February 2, observed at Pobitora with an awareness program involving students from Hadukpar LP School, Mayong, and conservation group Aaranyak.
