Almost 3 Lakh Cases Pending in Lower Courts of Assam

GUWAHATI: Over 2.9 lakh cases are pending in lower courts across Assam, authorities from the government informed the state assembly on February 20. 

In a written reply to a query, Law and Justice Minister, Siddhartha Bhattacharya said that the number of pending cases in lower courts have increased from 2,76,520 in 2017 to 2,91,960 in 2018. A total of 3,26,931 new cases were registered in 2018 and 3,11,150 cases were disposed. 

He added that the government is discussing setting up 33 fast track courts to handle cases of rape and murder of women and children. 

Bhattacharya also mentioned that 70 posts of judges in various lower courts are vacant and that out of the sanctioned posts of 24 judges in high court, four are currently vacant.
