GUWAHATI: Sibsagar MLA Akhil Gogoi has once again been suspended from the last day of the ongoing Assam Assembly session today, Monday, September 19.
Gogoi was suspended for speaking on the language medium policy controversy.
National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, has a clause for ‘medium of instruction’ in schools. The recommendation of the policy is that, wherever possible, the mother tongue/ home language/ local language/ regional language be used as the medium of instruction until Grade 5 and preferably until Grade 8 and beyond. This came in for sharp criticism, as many states fear the policy as a way to impose ‘Hindi’. The
Centre then revised it and clarified that there is no compulsion of language in NEP 2020.
Gogoi objected the issue of medium policy and exceeded the time given by the Speaker of the Assembly, Biswajit Daimary. He kept vehemently protesting even after he was requested to sit by the Speaker for
which he was later suspended. Gogoi also stated that the government and Education Minister have misinterpreted the National Education Policy.
