GUWAHATI: Assam has seen a decline of 8.2 percent in the total number of accidental deaths in 2020 compared to the previous year, as per a report of the National Crime Records Bureau.
A total of 4,863 people lost their lives due to forces of nature and other causes in Assam in 2020, compared to 5,300 in 2019.
The national rate of accidental deaths also declined to 27.7 percent against the 31.4 percent of the previous year. The causes of death include forces of nature like a forest fire, cyclone, landslide, tornado, and flood, etc and other causes include traffic accidents, air crashes, stampedes, electrocution, drug overdose, etc.
Assam registered 6,737 road accident cases in 2020 leaving 2,813 dead and 874 injured. In 8 railway crossing accidents, 9 people lost their lives. In a total of 413 other railway accidents, 413 people died and 3 were injured. Notably, there has been a decrease in the number of traffic accidents deaths during 2020 as compared to 2019 in the entire country.
100 people were killed by animals, 112 due to electrocution, and the cause of 105 was unknown.
