GUWAHATI: The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) on Tuesday staged a protest in Guwahati against the state government's recent move to introduce English as the medium of instruction for science and mathematics starting from Class 6, reports stated.
AASU had previously declared a month-long agitation across the state to demonstrate their disagreement with the Assam government's decision.
AASU Chief Advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya reportedly criticised the government's choice, stating that it is "anti-vernacular," and announced the commencement of a month-long agitation program in response.
Kickstarting the agitation, AASU organised a Gana Satyagraha (mass protest) in Guwahati on Tuesday. Bhattacharya said that the decision to launch the protest was made collectively after consulting with various organisations, including the Nikhil Bodo Students' Union, Asam Sahitya Sabha, Bodo Sahitya Sabha, teachers' associations, tribal Sahitya Sabha, and several tribal organisations, reports stated.

Bhattacharya criticised the government for not responding positively and for proceeding with the distribution of textbooks despite the ongoing dispute, media reports stated.
The AASU leaders reiterated that their protest would persist until the government retracts its decision.
