AASU celebrates 100 years Asam Chhatra Sanmilan

The All Assam Students' Union (AAASU) on Sunday celebrated 100 years of the formation of the first students' organization of the state - Asam Chhatra Sanmilan. The celebrations were held at the Latasil playground here in Guwahati. The Asam Chhatra Sanmilan was formed on this very ground on December 25, 1916. "Today is a glorious day in the history of Assam. From this playground, the journey of students' organizations in Assam started," said chief adviser of Aasu Samujjal Bhattacharyya. The centenary flag was hoisted by Gauhati University VC Mridul Hazarika. Similar flags were hoisted at 99 other places in the state. "Since the formation of the Sanmilan 100 years ago, we have witnessed how students have safeguarded the rights of indigenous people, promoted the Assamese language and worked for the development of the state," said AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath.
