GUWAHATI: Renowned Indian classical musician Ustad Rashid Khan passed away at a hospital in Kolkata on January 9.

He had been battling prostate cancer and had been undergoing treatment and was on ventilator support.

“We tried our best but failed. He passed away at around 3:45 PM,” a hospital official said in a media statement.

Rashid Khan was from the Rampur-Sahaswan gharana and was the nephew of Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan and the great-grandson of gharana founder Inayat Hussain Khan. He was 55 years old and is survived by his wife along with two sons and a daughter.

Rashid Khan is the singer of the popular song “Aaoge Jab Tum” from the film Jab We Met and was the recipient of the Padma Shri, as well as the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2006. In 2022, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India's third-highest civilian award, by the Indian Government in the field of Art.

"This is a great loss for the entire country and the entire music fraternity. I am in a lot of pain as I still can't believe that Rashid Khan is no more," West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said while speaking to the media.
