2026 Commonwealth Games: Cricket, Hockey, Badminton And Other Key Sports Removed

GUWAHATI: The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) announced  that only 10 sports will be included in the 2026 edition, scheduled to be held in Glasgow from July 23 to August 2, 2026.

The upcoming games will exclude cricket, field hockey, badminton, wrestling, and table tennis, thereby featuring a reduced sports lineup, and ultimately limiting India’s opportunities to secure medals.

The 2026 edition will be hosted across four venues in an eight-mile corridor within the Scottish city, and will include sports such as athletics (track and field), swimming, 3x3 basketball, track cycling, weightlifting, lawn bowls, artistic gymnastics, netball, boxing, and judo.

This is a significant setback for India, as the nation’s performance at the Commonwealth Games has historically been bolstered by sports like wrestling and shooting, both of which have contributed significantly to the nation's medal tally.

Wrestling, in particular, has seen India win 114 medals, including 49 golds. In the 2022 CWG held in Birmingham, Indian wrestlers claimed 12 medals, with six golds.

Similarly, badminton, table tennis, and field hockey have been strongholds for India as well. India has won 31 medals in badminton, 28 in table tennis, and six in field hockey across past CWG editions.

Field hockey, a staple since its debut in 1998, will be absent for the first time.
